Demarcation
artIst’s STATEMENT.
Demarcation.

How did property rights come to be? Property rights originated with the great thinkers within philosopy. Giants, who through the power of their ability to reason, elucidated the truth of the a priori. They discovered and described the self evident axiom of self-ownership, from which they proceeded step-by-step to deduce the full corpus.

From my investigation and study of these philosophers, I have come to understand and recognise the power of property rights in the common law and the need of the “State” to seek control of those rights through the imposed law of statute, arrogating property rights to itself illegitimately.

It is this fundamental violation that I am exploring in my art, in this case, my lens has focused on individual post boxes which represent the “State” and its demarcation of private property as opposed to public property. This demarcation is surrounded by pathways that may, if one looked closer, lead to, at least in part, some enlightenment.

‘The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance’.
Aristotle.
